Directions for Carefree Lusters

  1. Mix the dry powders in a Klyr-Fire solution, hair spray concentrate, or oil-base media for brush or spray application.  Lead-free and without toxic fumes, but avoid breathing dust.

  2. Apply the water color waxes straight from the pan using water and a brush to a clean, oil-free, vitreous surface.  Bead artists are finding the water color waxes preferable to the dry powders for a more even application of lusters to hot beads.  To color your bead, place a small amount of the wax in a metal spoon outside of the flame.  Heat the glass bead to a cherry-red, and either dip or roll it over the wax.  Put the bead back into the flame with the attached luster (the wax burns off) to anneal the glass and to better fix the luster.  Avoid overheating of the bead.  A temperature of about 1400° F to 1600° F is sufficient to fix the luster to the glass surface.  Too much heat, and the luster will sink and melt into the glass with loss of most of the luster.

  3. Apply your cut or punched decal designs to a clean, oil-free vitreous surface.  Place the decal in water for a few seconds to float off the design from the paper backing, position the design onto the vitreous surface, squeegee, and dry.

  4. Fire the dry luster pigment application on the vitreous surface for a predetermined temperature and time to produce the desired durable, lustrous coating.

  5. Typical firing temperatures are 1350° F for 3 minutes on enameled copper; 1080° F for 3 minutes on enameled aluminum; 1380° F on the non-tin side of window glass; and from about 1600° F to 1800° F on glazed ceramics, depending upon the softness or hardness of the glaze.
