We will start with the basics and have you enameling within 15 minutes. You will quickly move on to more advanced procedures and selected techniques on both days.

Saturday will consist of three enamel pendant projects which involve many enameling procedures and materials which will give you a strong grounding in basic enameling. Procedures include sifting, firing, wet inlay, application of fine silver foil, mixing colors by layering, stencil, liquid brushable enamel, sgraffito, and a simple cloisonne using fine silver wire on fine silver tooling sheet.

Sunday will consist of learning about painting on enamel materials (ceramic pigments, water colors, overglaze painting colors, acrylic enamels, enamel marking pens, enamel marking crayons, oils and mediums used, and Carefree Lusters®). The day will also cover many procedures (transferring an image/cartoon, creating texture, painting procedures, color mixing, firing, and transparent clear cover coats. The second project incorporates embossing thin copper, enamel application and firing with a torch. Time permitting, three other procedures will be demonstrated, dry brush sgraffito, dropping and coating a three dimensional shape i.e. a copper bowl or a seamless copper bead.

By the end of each workshop day, you should have a good idea as to what you wish to accomplish with enamel. All tools and materials are supplied. Participants are only expected to bring an open mind, and a pair of eager hands.

Separation Workshop - March 24 & 25, 2012

Date: Saturday & Sunday, March 24 & 25, 2012 - Instructor: Tom Ellis

Time: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (12:00 noon to 1:00 PM - lunch)

Cost: $90 per person/per day

Materials Apprx. $10 - to be paid at time of workshop

Separation is a technique which produces unusual patterns and color blends. 2-3 layers of contrasting enamel colors are applied to a copper surface. Separation is painted onto those layers and fired. The separation works with the viscosity and surface tension of the enamels, sinking and spreading apart the layers to result in marbleized effects.

Cloisonne Workshop - April 7, 2012

We will work on a copper 1-1/2" circle, which can be finished with a sterling silver cinch mount bezel shown above. You would also have a choice of working on two sizes of ovals if you prefer.

Saturday, January 28, 2012 - Instructor: Tom Ellis

Time: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (12:00 noon to 1:00 PM -Llunch)

Cost: $90

Material Fee: apprx. $6 to $8, depending on material choices. (Material fee may be paid at workshop)

Workshop Description:

Cloisonne is a technique where silver wire is bent with tweezers into linear designs. The wire design is fused into a base coat of enamel on copper creating cells or 'cloisons'. Silver and/or gold foil can be added into the cloison to create reflective texture. Transparent and/or opaque enamels are wet-packed into the cloisons, dried and fired. 2 or 3 applications may be necessary to fill the cloisons. Shading and color mixing techniques will be shown. Wire bending techniques and decorative inclusions will be covered. When finished with the enamel, it will be bezeled in a sterling silver cinch mount bezel making a beautiful pendant. Beginning, intermediate, or advanced - all skill levels WELCOME!

Black Oxide Workshop - May 5th & 6th, 2012

Black Oxide - Sgraffito - Silver Foil - Transparent Enamel Workshop

Date: May 5th & 6th, 2012 - Instructor: Tom Ellis

Time: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (12:00 noon to 1:00 PM -Lunch)

Cost $90 per person, per day ($180 for both days)

Material Fee: Approx. $5 to $10 depneding on material choices - payable at workshop

Black Oxide mixed with Klyr-Fire and water is applied directly onto copper with a sponge. It is allowed to dry, then further worked by sgraffito. A transparent enamel that works well direct on copper is applied and fired. Fine silver foil is applied and fired to the surface. Black oxide is again applied over the silver foiled areas adding texture. 913 Mixing white can be applied as additional line work. Transparent colors are again applied and fired. This procedure may be repeated. A final application of 913E Mixing white and/or Carefree lusters may be applied. Glass lump 'spheres' may also be applied to the surface and fired. The black of the oxide highly contrasts with the transparent enamels direct on copper and the brightness of the silver foil, which creates visual depth.
